Lightning Storm

I settled down for an early night after becoming addicted to watching DVDs into the small hours in Lee's absence....... within minutes of me turning off the light my basement bedroom was constantly being lit up with bright lights and I could hear people talking and laughing....
I headed upstairs to see who was interrupting my sleep !!
When I peeked through the blinds I was greeted by the most amazing lightning storm I have EVER seen

The whole sky was lit up by purple flashes and there were bolts of lightning that were scarily close. We were put on storm watch as there is a possibility of these types of storms turning into tornadoes....
Luckily for us it was a great storm to watch and passed over without causing any damage.

Update

OK since Calgary Lee has completed his orientation, wives/partners can go on this course too but I had to wait in for courier with our stuff from the UK so missed it. I would have liked to attend to learn more about the job for when I go with Lee so I would have a better understanding of things.
Orientation is where they learn the paperwork side of things and all the rules and regulations to the job etc..... 3 days classroom work with Bruce.

Once orientation was over Lee's second mentor trip was arranged.... he is currently out in the USA with Steve he will be out for nearly two weeks so will post pics and details when he gets back.

Whilst Lee has been gone I am keeping myself busy with the girls and exploring our new hometown

Calgary

When Lee got back from his trip we got a call to say that our boxes had arrived in Canada and that we needed to go to Customs in Calgary to get them released for delivery. Since we knew Lee was on Orientation this week and not in the classroom until Tuesday we decided to head over to Calgary on Sunday and have the day there, stay over and come home Monday.

Since we were still car hunting we decided to check some out over Calgary way as there seemed to be more available.... so we checked out Auto Trader and Kijiji and headed down Sunday morning. since it was Sunday we were able to check the cars out and note which we would like to look at again on Monday. I must say that shopping for a car here is a very different experience to back home. Here the salesman ask if you need help, give you the keys and leave you to look around the car..... no pressure.

It was also Calgary Stampede the same weekend so we headed there on Sunday evening. The stampede is an annual event in Calgary that lasts for the week there are lots of Rodeo events and competitions, Concerts - Bon Jovi was playing on the Wednesday - I bet that was an amazing night. There is also a funfair and lots of food stalls and a couple of beer tents.

Monday morning we headed over to Customs to get our boxes cleared. We had to sign a declaration regarding the contents of the boxes. Once we had the release form we headed to UPS to hand this in and arrange delivery. Our boxes finally arrived on Wednesday its nice to have not only all of our clothes but having some of our personal stuff certainly makes the house feel like home.

Once the necessaries had been completed we went back to a couple of places to look at cars. As we drove through the city a storm begin to gather..... you could literally see the black rain clouds descend. and then it went pitch black and the rain started. It was coming down really heavy and then it turned to hail and we could barely see to drive ....

When the rain had calmed down we headed over to the garage to see the car we had looked at the previous day, it had been totally ruined by the storm. All of the cars on their lot had loads of dents all over them where they had been pelted by these huge hail stones, some had broken windscreens too !! We also heard that on the other side of Calgary they were on Tornado alert !!

Enough excitement for one day we did a quick trip to Ikea we headed home. The storm decided to follow us all the way back to Lethbridge luckily for us this time it was just really heavy rain then the sun would break through until it caught us back up !!

Street Wheelers

Street Wheelers is a club that was founded in Lethbridge in 1976 they hold an annual Street Machine weekend each summer on the second weekend of July more than 1100 vehicle's take part and other local muscle cars lend support. They hold several events over the course of the weekend with the first being on Friday evening 7-10pm this will be a street cruise along 3rd Ave South where the participants get the chance to show off their cars to local residents and other drivers. We watched this event and were not disappointed by the cars that took part.

As you can see there are cars from every era, every shape size colour possible was here tonight.

On Saturday there is the 100 foot dash, the cars compete to beat the clock. We didnt see the event but heard it was amazing to watch.

On Sunday at Galt Gardens the Show and Shine took place. This is the owners opportunity to showcase their car to the public. Here you are able to get a close look at the cars, the engines and immaculate body work and interiors. Also on Sunday more than 50 trophies are awarded for the best restored vehicle, fastest street car etc

This is a fantastic weekend and you don't have to be a complete petrol head to enjoy it !!

First Mentor Trip

Sunday saw Lee head out for his first mentor trip. I agreed to drop Lee of in High River to meet up with Craig who was to take him out on his first trip. A little scary for me as I had only driven twice before over this side of the pond and High River is 2.5 hours away and I had to make my own way home - eeeek !! I managed the trip without any problems.

Lee and Craig went from High River to Delta which is in the province of British Columbia. On his way over the mountains Lee saw his first bear but was not quick enough with the camera unfortunatley. I'm sure there will be more to come ..... as long as we see them from inside the safety of our truck !!

Later in the week they did a return trip to Calgary and then back over the mountains to Richmond which is located on Canada's west coast in the province of British Columbia. Lee took some great pictures of his mountain adventures.

Lee and Craig finally returned from Richmond to Medicine Hat and then home to Lethbridge. Lee really enjoyed his first trip out and learnt lots from his mentor. We will see where his next trip will take him.

Waterton

Since Lee had the bank holiday weekend off we decided to make the most of it and spend Saturday at Waterton National Park.

http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/waterton/index.aspx

So jumped in the car and made our way over to Waterton and I was not disappointed. The mountains here never fail to amaze me and I love how they appear on the horizon and look so beautiful becoming so powerful as you driver closer to them.

We paid $7.80 each to enter the park, you can buy family passes also and annual passes if you plan on being a regular visitor. The annual passes can we either just for Waterton or for all the National Parks.

Our first stop was to buy me a fleece jacket as I had stupidly forgotten to pick up my coat !! All of the gift shops sell jumpers and fleeces so I can't be the only one !! lol

Once I was wrapped up warm we headed down to the lake and the views here are beautiful.

We walked down the side of the lake and down to where the campsite is. There are big wooden huts here for BBQ's etc. All down the road are houses and cabins for rent. As we were walking through where the house were we came across some deer just sat outside someones house - amazing

We stopped for lunch at Trappers Mountain Grill and trading post. This is a family run restaurant and the service was great. They had quite a simple menu with everything from soup / stew to burgers and chicken strips. They will also make up sandwiches if you want to go on a hike and take food with you.

Our next stop was Cameron Falls. This isn't the biggest waterfall Ive seen but it really stunning and a great spot for taking photo's. All around the falls are little gophers/chipmunks

We decided to have a drive up to the prince of wales hotel on our way out of the park. This is in a stunning location and the views from the dining area are out of this world !!

Canada Day

Sorry guys I have fallen so behind with th blog, wifi at home now up and running so will do my best to catch up.

July 1st is Canada Day so we decided to spend the evening down at Henderson Lake. They have allsorts of activities going on, stalls with lots of goodies, a stage and dancefloor and then around 11pm they put on a fantastic fireworks display. It's definately worth staying up for. As 11pm approaches everyone gathers around the lake to watch the display.

The city also laid on buses so everyone could get home safely after the event had finished.

Lee was off for the holiday weekendand went off on his first mentor trip on the Sunday. His first trip was to head over the mountains into BC

Thursday 1 July 2010

Test Passed

Lee had his test today and I'm really pleased to say that he has passed first time - well done Lee !!

We headed straight to get this registered officially and flipped my licence whilst we were there. Any wives/partners doing this will need to ensure that they have their UK license and counterpart, passport and work permit and proof of residency IE bank statement, rental agreement etc as we are not yet employed in AB.

Tomorrow is Canada Day so it is a bank holiday here so we will be heading off to Lake Henderson to watch the fireworks tomorrow evening. The bank holiday also means Lee gets to have the weekend off before heading off on his first mentor trip.

Spouse work permits extended

The above link takes you to the government website that confirms that the scheme has been extended until 2012 which is fantastic news for those heading over here and want the potential of an additional income.

going well

The house is coming together nicely, we have all of our furniture now and only a couple of hiccups which will be sorted out tomorrow. The furniture store sent the wrong table and chairs and the doors on the TV cabinet do not close properly, we rang the guys at the store and was assured it would be rectified asap. the new stuff will be delivered on Tuesday and the old stuff removed at the same time, the salesman will even come and put it all together for you - you wouldn't get that in the UK !!

Lee's driving is going well and he should take his test this week but there may be a little delay with it being the Canada Day bank holiday.... no bother we aren't paying rent just anyhow as our landlord gave us some time free of charge :-)

We signed up for our cable and Internet so once that is all up and running I will post some pictures of the house etc

Our next thing on the to do list is to find a cheap run around car for lee to get to and from work and for me if I am not going with him on a trip. I have now driven for the first time over here :-) I drove all the way back to Lethbridge from Fort McLeod about 50 Kilometers.

House Rented !!

When we left Chris & Tina's on Monday evening we drove around looking at more houses and saw one just around the corner, called the landlord to see if we could view it the following day, he said if you re near by I can be there in 5 minutes!! Result !!

We waited for Dallas to arrive and headed inside, totally loved it!! Negotiated a great price on the rent with some utilities included too. DAY ONE was a fantastic day!!

The following morning I headed to the mall whilst Lee went for diver training and found stuff for the house. Once Lee was back we headed to the south side to look at furniture and add me to the Canadian bank account this was a simple process and only took around 10 minutes, I was issued with my debit card there and then and set up my own pin right there in the branch, very different experience to the UK. The other difference is you get charged for everything !! We needed a cheque book as our landlord has requested the rent be paid by this method it cost around $40 for 100 cheques there are so may different designs which you can upgrade to if you choose - "I'll take the cheapest please"

When we were at Tina & Chris' yesterday we also met Jo whose hubby also works for H&R. She very kindly invited us all for a roast dinner and volunteered her hubby who was arriving home that night to cook it !!So come 4:30 we headed for Jo & Faron's for a fabulous Roast beef dinner. Faron you are a genius it was amazing. Lee has to cook next time should be interesting!! (hope everyone likes beans on toast or take away!!)

After dinner we met Dallas to pay the first months rent and damage deposit and pick up the keys to our new home, we also got the rest of this month free :-)

Who ordered the rain ?

Woke on my first morning in Lethbridge to rain :-( and not just any rain it was banging it down !!!! Lethbridge has recently had some of the worst rain ever and been subject to some flooding. The Old Man River is sooooo high the roads around it are still closed as a precaution. The rain did stop around 11am and the sun was out for the rest of the day.

Once Lee was back from his driver training we went to the mall to get me a Canadian cell number. For the next couple of hours we drove around West Lethbridge looking at rentals that I had seen on-line. We also called into see Chris and Tina Lunnon who are also working for H&R Transport, I came bringing goodies (bisto and oxo cubes) that are so expensive in comparison to the UK. We were invited to stay for tea and all shared some fabulous BBQ food made by Chris (thanks Chris)It was great to be made to feel so welcome on my first day here.

Yorkies are now in Canada

Arrived safely in Calgary yesterday at 15:05 Canadian time. Flight was good but long with no in-flight entertainment as the whole TV/movie system had broke !!! Bad Times
Had a lovely lady sat next to me though and we managed to keep ourselves entertained.

When the flight landed I headed over to customs with the card that you are given on the plane, I told the customs guy that it was my intention to apply for an open work permit. He stamped my card and sent me over to the immigration offices. The lady that helped me there was the same officer that had issued Lee with his Temporary Work Permit 10 days earlier and she remembered him so she was fully up to date with the scheme that is running in Alberta for Truckers wives/spouses. I had with me a copy of Lee's passport, our common law declaration (this was notarized in the UK), a copy of Lee's work permit and contract of work with H&R, my police check and a copy of Lee's. Things could not have gone smoother I was issued with my work permit and was sent to the cashier to pay my $150. After collecting my bags I headed out to meet Lee.

Lee collected me from Calgary and we headed straight to A W's for a burger (who says romance isn't dead eh?) I was a little emotional on the drive up to Lethbridge, it had been a stressful few days with the build up to the move and also seeing Lee again was great. It was lovely and sunny for our drive back to Lethbridge which cheered me up no end.

We drove around the west side to check out and potential rentals as this is the first thing on the to do list. Will keep you all posted

Last day in UK

Well most of our goodbyes have been said just my Mum and Dad, the pooch and Mick left in the morning. We have had some fantastic nights out with friends before we leave and have shed many a tear..... didn't think it would be so hard.

Have spent my last day running last minute errands, and of course doing the bloody packing, chuffing bane of my life!!
Must have packed, weighed suitcases and unpacked/re packed suitcases and boxes like a million times today. Have thus sent Lee on a mission to get radox bubble bath ready for tomorrow to rest my aching back.

My wonderful lift to the airport (Michael) will be collecting me at 8:45. I'm very nervous about travelling all that way on my own, I'm quite a nervous flier to start with so will be filling my boots with kalms tonight. On a positive I cant wait to see Lee tomorrow :-)

Whilst I have been partying Lee has been having his driver training and has now mastered the dreaded gear box !!!

Wednesday 16 June 2010

Day 3

Today lee started his driver training, he was collected from the lodge and taken to where the training is completed. He did just two hours on his first day and this was just round the yard whilst he hot used to the gears!!
3 more hours tomorrow

I'm off out tonight for tea with my special work friends (Lisa, Nigel, Amanda, Gwen, Rachel, Kate, Karen & Dave)
will be so sad to say goodbye to them all :-(

Tuesday 15 June 2010

Day Two in Canada

Hans picked Lee up this morning from the lodge and took him to sort out his SN,driving licence, and also his medical and drugs and alcohol test. He was even taken for a Chinese buffet lunch in between :-) In the afternoon he opened a bank account with Canadian Trust which we can turn into a joint account when I arrive.

Whilst Lee has been starting the ball rolling over there I have been tying up loose ends here and finishing work and packing the rest of our stuff into boxes to be sent over once were settled.

Sunday 13 June 2010

Day one in Canada

Lee was collected from the lodge yesterday morning and went to complete his Air brake test.
He spent the day learning everything he would need with an instructor and then completed a multiple choice test at the end of the day.
He was really pleased when he found out that he had passed.

He has Sunday off, so he will spend the day exploring the town a little more. As we don't have a car yet he will have to do this on foot. He's going to see if he can get some more rental details for the area we want, I have looked online but want to view them in the flesh before we decide.

Saturday 12 June 2010

Girls night out - round 1

After taking lee to the airport yesterday morning i needed a night that would cheer me up and what better way to do it than with old friends :-)
We don't get together very often these days but it was just like old times we had a lovely meal (except for Mand- who found plastic in her Italian pasta ewwww) and lots of drinks and reminiscing about tghe good old days

Friday 11 June 2010

Time to go

There have been a mixture of emotions over the last few days, we are of course very excited to be starting our new adventure but we are also a little sad about leaving behind such good friends and family. I have been doing so well in controlling the tears but have lost it over the last two days

Last night was quite difficult for Lee, he said goodbye to our closest friends ready for his flight today, I have that to come next week :'-(

Mick Naz took us to the airport this morning so Lee could ctch his lunchtime flight. Right now he is halfway there.... inhindsight I wish that we had travelled together, would have made it easier for both of us

Thursday 3 June 2010

Documents have arrived

Got back from Meadowhall today and the courier had been with Lee's LMO and all the documents he needs to gain his work permit when he arrives in Canada next Friday.

I will need to have photo copies of all of his documents and ID so that when I follow him on June 20Th I can obtain an open work permit when I arrive

the goodbyes begin

We had the first of many goodbye evenings this week. We met up with our old friends Tony & Wendy, we decided to keep it low key and went out for a lovely meal together.
It was really weird saying goodbye to them at the end of the evening, will have to really make an effort to keep in touch with people back home, it would be a shame for friendships to drift apart when we move

I'm now organising a farewell night with the girls, now this night could get messy ;-)
I will already be emotional as Lee flies to Canada on the same day and I'm crap at goodbyes even if it is only for 10 days & these are my girls and although we might not always see each other all of the time but would always be there if one of us needed anything. It will be great to see everyone, I'm sure there will be tears at the end of the night but it will be a fantastic night all the same

Wednesday 2 June 2010

nearly time

Lee has received an e-mail today with his flight details, he flies from Manchester on June 11Th, we've just rung up and upgraded him also for the extra baggage allowance, he was lucky and got the last seat in premium !! yey !!

Lee has also been and picked up our boxes to pack and send over the rest of our clothes and bits and pieces that wont be in the luggage that we take on our initial flight. Will be very strange packing up our stuff for the last time, but cant wait to get there now.

Sunday 23 May 2010

Flight Booked

We received an e-mail from Eugenie this week to say Lee's flights will definitely be the 10Th or 11Th of June - yippee

So I have booked my follow on flight, a little earlier than planned. I am booked on a direct flight from Manchester to Calgary on the 20Th of June, I'm a little apprehensive about flying on my own but I have upgraded to premium to make it a little more bearable. I have to say it was worth it for the extra 10kg of luggage allowance it gives you. I booked through Canadian Affair, but I did notice that the prices have started to rise from the 27Th of June.

4 weeks today and I'll be on my way !!!

Wednesday 19 May 2010

Big Decisions

I have decided to bite the bullet and come out to Lethbridge earlier than I planned.
Lee is due to fly on either the 10Th or 11Th of June and I had planned to wait until he had completed all of his training before joining him.
We have talked about this non stop as I have just started work for a new client in my job and I'm worried about starting things I wont be here to finish,..... so today I have handed in my 4 weeks notice and now plan to join Lee on the 20Th of June :-D

Sunday 16 May 2010

Newquay

Last Sunday we headed to Newquay for a last trip away with our good friends Deb n Mick. We had a 5.5 hour drive down there so upon arriving at our hotel we felt it necessary to sample the local cider "rattler", just so we were in with the locals you understand ;-)

Monday we decided to head to Port Isaac, the home of Doc Martin

A really stunning place, but a struggle to get to as really steep hills and very little room to pass if you were unlucky enough to meet someone coming the other way!!

Our next stop was Polzeath beach

Then onto Padstow, we were really disappointed with it here as everyone raved about it and it gets loads of publicity with being the home of "Rick Stein", whilst it was a lovely place it just didn't live up to the hype. And it had the worst fish and chips EVER!!

We decided to head nearer to Newquay for the rest of the afternoon and parked up in Newquay town and walked to little Fistral beach

We then walked along the cliff tops to Fistral beach. The views up there are stunning and the beach is beautiful and it's famous for its surf tournaments.

We sat and had a beer watching the guys surfing.

The next day we decide that Lands End was a must, and we were not disappointed, the views are amazing from there.... look for yourself.

Next stop, Marazion to see Saint Michael's Mount, this is an island that houses a medieval castle and can be accessed by foot at low tide

Not wanting to miss anything out on our short stay we decided to head to Carbis Bay, this is a really small bay but is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen in the UK. From here we decided to drive to St Ives for the afternoon. We had a traditional cornish pasty for lunch and cornish icecream for dessert, mmmmmmmmm

Saint Ives was our favourite place throughout our visit and we would stay here if we ever venture this way again.
On the drive back to Newquay we decided to stop off at the Cider Farm to do some shopping for essentials after tasting them all that is ;-D MMMMMMMMMM scrumpy was my favourite. To work up an appetite for tea we decided to walk around Newquay and headed to the beach just below our hotel where they were running surf lessons.

On our last morning we just had time to visit the Blue Reef Aquarium where we saw all manor of aquatic creatures.... we did some last minute prezzie shopping for the parents who are looking after us so well whist we wait to move. At lunch time the long journey home began.....

We had a lovely time with good friends
